Judy Braham is a CareDoula Certified® End-of-Life Doula. As with many people, she felt a calling to this profession during the pandemic. A hospice volunteer, she also has her own EOL doula care business, Conscious Dying. Judy is passionate about educating the public about the unique benefits to utilizing an End-of-Life Doula and would welcome any requests to speak to community groups and organizations.
Judy is also a licensed massage therapist, a level II Reiki practitioner, a certified sound healer, an ordained minister and is the store manager for The Ray, The Star, & The Moon Metaphysical Shoppe in Nokomis, Florida. These skills and more provide her with unique tools to add to her doula “tool bag”. She is dedicated to helping those with critical or terminal illnesses to make the most of their remaining time, determine their final wishes and navigate the many intricacies of the dying process.
Thank you for allowing me to be your president for the coming year. The Board is planning on a great year for BPWEV. We have scheduled our Wine-Tasting Event for October, the date to be determined. The Florida State Conference is being held in Sarasota from June 5th to the 7th at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota. There are some wonderful speakers planned for the event: Michele Covallo, BPW FL President, Liz Alpert, Mayor of Sarasota, Ron Turner, Sarasota County Supervisor of Election, and Dawn Sakes, MSW Executive Director More TOO Life. The cost for the entire event is $179.00, but you can choose to attend only one day, if this works better for you. There is a BPQ/FL Breast Cancer Bra Decorating Contest. Irene and Teresa have agreed to decorate our special bra entry to submit for the contest. Entries will be displayed during the conference. All donations will go to BPW/FL Breast Cancer Fund. Thank you Irene and Teresa.
The month of May is important for so many reasons: Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, and most important Memorial Day to honor our loved ones who have passed, and those we have lost in service to our country. Please thank a veteran for their service. They have earned many accolades for keeping us safe.
One of the goals for this year is to build the membership. I am asking for everyone’s help in this endeavor. We had people that joined our LO, but never attended a meeting or participated in fundraising events. If you are interested in a committee, please call or email me and we will add your name to the list.
Our speaker this month is Judy Braham. Judy founded Gulfcoast Women in Networking in 2015. Please let us give her a great welcome by attending the May meeting.
Best Regards,
Sue Hogrefe
President, BPWEV
For those of us who never knew her, I’d like to take a moment to introduce the lady our scholarship awards are named after.
Christine Davis was a BPW member for over 50 years, first in New York State and later in Florida. Her energy to promote BPW was astounding. She served in every office the organization had to offer, short of State or National President. She served on many committees and especially enjoyed being chair of the scholarship committee until ill health required her to resign from too many obligations. Her beautiful smile, her eagerness to be always willing to help and her efficient handling of any task she elected to do or help with, will not be forgotten by the BPWEV members, but will be missed.
The Christine Davis Memorial Scholarships will preserve the love and devotion she championed to achieve equality for all women.
At the BPW Florida State Conference in June, 2023, the Proposed Public Policy was presented and approved. The new Public Policy for 2023 – 2024 is below:
Since the inception of BPW/FL in 1919, BPW/FL has always supported women’s rights. BPW/FL continues to support the ERA as a basic foundation of our Public Policy Platform, even as we understand that passing the ERA grows more difficult with the passage of time. BPW/FL firmly believes that equality of rights under the law should not be abridged or denied by the United States or by any state on account of sex, and the rights of women require constant vigilance.
