“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” – Jim Rohn
Spring is sprung and summer is right around the corner! This time of the year our thoughts naturally turn to fresh starts and new beginnings and many of us perform our annual “spring cleaning” routines. Did you also know that May is National Women’s Health Care Month? This would be a great time to get your own “engine” checked and tuned up!
Women are biologically gifted to be natural “caregivers” – we are the ones who bring new beings into this world. We raise and nurture our children, we often look after the neighborhood children, and we even tend to “mother” our own spouses! Because of our inclination to care for others, we often forget to care for ourselves! It’s often not until we absolutely cannot lift our arm above our head to wash our hair that we finally will admit we need to have that shoulder looked at by an orthopedic physician.
But it’s important to remember that there are many health issues that show only subtle symptoms, if any, and if we are not vigilant with annual check-ups, they can be missed all together until it can be too late. Women tend to use the excuse of being “too busy” to take time to visit the doctor for these annual check-ups, but that’s just an excuse.
Put yourself and your health first this month! Call and schedule your annual gynecological exam, mammography, eye exam and annual routine physical with your family physician. If you’re of the appropriate age, don’t put off the recommended colonoscopy either; it really isn’t as bad as it was a few years back! With advancements daily in medicine, even the most undesirable tests are much more tolerable now. No more excuses, make those appointments today!
